Cornwall To Caithness (2011)
Painting Stack, Oil on canvas.
For those in the know this journey is Lands End to John O’Groats. This painting stack was a landscape inspired abstract painting that I carried from Cornwall to Caithness in the summer of 2011. I cycled unaided 1,416 miles carrying all essential items for self sufficiency including a pile of rocks (see the cairns) and this indiscriminately cut, large painting which was photographed and posted on a daily basis as I mapped the journey via the Isle of Arran from one end of the UK to the other.
Every piece of the painting names a place and was sent forth using the questionable reliance of the British postal service. Not every painting made it home, but the majority did and here is the evidence. A salute to the Royal Mail for being 95% effective, although you never know, additional portions may still turn up.
